Holiday Reading

Looking for some great books to entertain you through the holidays? Here are some of my recent favourites.

WaveWave: a Memoir of Life After the Tsunami by Sonali Deraniyagala

Almost 12 years after the Boxing Day tsunami, the devastation wrought by that huge wave is still heart wrenching in Sonali’s tragic memoir. She lost her two sons, her husband, and her parents on that fateful day in Sri Lanka. Sonali falls apart and then she finds strength to slowly pick up the pieces, keeping her family near to her by holding onto memories of them.

Two BrothersTwo Brothers by Ben Elton

When I read the name Ben Elton, I think English comedian, but there is nothing funny about this novel. It is a serious family saga set in the darkness of wartime Germany about two brothers – twins – who share everything but blood. Filled with romance, endurance, sacrifice and survival, it’s a tome of a book, but well worth the time.

We Are All Completely Beside OurselvesWe Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler

Bestselling author of The Jane Austen Book Club, Karen Joy Fowler’s latest novel brings us into the lives of an unusual middle-class American family. Despite their love for each other, the family’s well-intended actions bring heartbreaking damage. This story is dark but beautiful, with a powerful message.
