The Pros & Cons of Fairy Tales

Any feminist who wants to teach their children about gender equality will agree that many fairy tales send the wrong messages. All too often, the beautiful girl is saved by prince charming and they live happily ever after.

But there are pros to such fairy tales. The other day, I walked into my bathroom to find my two daughters lathering my shower screen with an entire 1-litre bottle of body wash – I could barely see them through the suds.

I gasped. “What are you doing?”

“Cleaning the house like Cinderella,” one replied.

And therein lies the positive side to this fairy tale. What parent wouldn’t rejoice in their kids cleaning the house without being asked? I might just buy them Cinderella outfits and a broom to promote a bit more housework. Given their heavy-handedness with the shower gel, I’d better buy them a fairy tale book with an environmental message too. Oh, and one about a young prince who helps his Cinderella with the housework. Come to think of it, I should also find one about a princess who earns equal pay to her male colleagues. I could be searching the bookstores till I die.
