To mark the end of Adoption Awareness Month, I’d like to recommend a positive story about international adoption. In her memoir, From India with Love, Sydney journalist Latika Bourke shares her life story with candour. Left at an Indian orphanage as a newborn baby by her 14-year-old birth mother, Latika was adopted by an Australian family and she enjoyed a happy, stable childhood, but she resented the need to prove her Australianness because of her skin colour. In her quest for acceptance Latika avoided her past, adamant that she’d never visit India, content with the little knowledge she had about her birth mother. But India eventually seduced Latika and she returned to her birth country to find a piece of herself. From India with Love is her journey of discovery about who, and what, she is.
